And there's also Temple Discs which you'll get in cutscenes, displayed quite prominently in Sir Cumference's (haha) laboratory. Fruit is collected at the end of the level for completing it the first time, and an Arcade Token each time afterwards, both of which are required to play the arcade games. There's also the rare resource Slimetanium, sometimes found randomly in containers scattered throughout the world, in which an undisclosed amount can raise Pac-Man's maximum health. I never saw how many required because I was getting plenty from each level, and there's no set amount unlike Spyro the Dragon. With these abilities Pac-Man's supposed to collect ordinary berries to progress from one world to the next, though I didn't quite understand this at first. Plus, where Pac-Man's balls of steel were a fun time every time, I can only vaguely recall one time where I could say I had fun with each of his powerups in Ghostly Adventures. While this was the case with the single powerup in Pac-Man World, that's not a design choice I'm nostalgic for, and even then Steel Ball Pac-Man functioned differently such as not being able to swim and being impervious to damage (see also Super Mario 64's Metal Cap). Pac-Man can also find a berry that makes him magnetic, allowing him to draw ghosts nearer to him and cling to the side-scrolling-enabling metal surfaces a balloon powerup that inflates him to aid in navigating long distances a berry that allows him to turn into a giant granite ball that was no better than the Crash Bandicoot hamster ball controls a bouncy powerup and finally a spinny powerup that allows him to set a path before whizzing around like a whirling dervish.Īs fun as these powerups sound they're sadly underutilised and only exist when there's a puzzle nearby that only said powerup can solve. Fire and Ice Pac launch bolts of their respective element to melt and freeze opponents, which see a pleasant amount of use in the game's 'puzzles' (which is to say 'melt/freeze this thing' to jump atop it). This only applies to some of main antagonist Betrayus's spectral soldiers, as others of certain elements require Pac-Man to pick up a power pellet (sorry, 'berry') of the opposing element. Pac-Man is a run-of-the-mill platformer protagonist, able to chomp his ghostly foes, and scare them when he eats five in quick succession (dare I call this a 'chain chomp'?), thus making them easier to fight. Still, if the devs are going to make the effort to make a tie-in game, they should somehow tie in the story, and the player to what could be an interesting show (hey, I was skeptical of Skylanders Academy once upon a time). Not that it particularly matters given cutscenes are infrequent and oftentimes appear out of nowhere. Without watching the show it's hard to get an idea of who any of the recurring characters are and what their role in the game's story are. His redesign, indeed the entire game is based loosely on the TV show of the same name, using the same voice actor Erin Matthews. I'm willing to accept this is an unavoidable criticism given that adding anything to his original design - three quarters of a yellow circle - is bound to be jarring. inconsistent its design is.įor starters, Pac-Man looks and sounds strange. As much as I enjoy the first of Pac-Man's 3D outings, I didn't get much out of one of his more recent adventures released on Steam in 2013, nor did it seem developers Monkey Bar and Namco Bandai had either given how. If I were to say Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures made me nostalgic for the Playstation One platformer Pac-Man World, you'd be forgiven for thinking I meant that in an endearing way.
